Hello, my name is Ryan Johnson. I am the trainer here at Perfection Kennel South. Our training approach is a methodology that is tried, true and proven. I have studied under one of the best professional trainers, Jon Hann of Perfection Kennel. After years of mentorship under the PK Team, we are excited to offer the PK Way in Texas.
I have been an avid upland hunter for most of my life, and training professionally for nearly a decade. Give us the opportunity to work with you and we will make sure your dog is the best it can be.
My Story
I guess this all started when I was small. I remember Papa, my grandfather, would stop by on his way to western Oklahoma or Kansas and he would have this trailer on the back of his suburban, filled with bird dogs. He would tell me stories about his bird hunting adventures and I would dream of being out there. When I turned six I finally got to go with him. I don’t remember the first bird I shot or where we were, but I do remember watching the dogs do their job.
Once I graduated school I joined the Navy and then after my enlistment was up I worked for a police department for six years. During that time I bought my first bird dog, a German Shorthair Pointer named Artemis. I read every training book I could get my hands on and she was the first dog I trained. Now , in retrospect, I know that I didn't do the best job. Regardless, people who were around her started asking me to help them train their dog and I did what I could to get them started, and help them along their way. My family decided to move to Texas and I left my job as a police officer and began training dogs full time.
Even though I was a “professional“ I still had a lot to learn….
I was having issues with a specific dog I was forced fetching. I ran into another dog trainer at a hunt test, Buck Henderson. I asked for his input on the issue and he told me I should check out the Perfection Kennel Perfect Retrieve DVD. I bought the DVD and studied it, but I was still running into issues with this dog. At the end of the PK videos it says if you have any questions you can call, so I did.
The next day, I was on the phone with Jessica Hann. I explained that I was a trainer and the issue I was having. She responded by telling me that I should come to a clinic. I explained that I probably couldn’t afford to do that now, but maybe in the future. She offered me a chance to come for free as long as I would work and help when they needed, and still to this day I am so grateful for this opportunity because it changed everything.
I met Jon and Jessica Hann when I went to my first PK clinic and my mind was blown. I soaked up as much as I could that first clinic, but couldn’t get enough. I went to every clinic I could possibly get to. I worked hard to show my gratitude for them allowing me to be there.
After swapping to the Perfection Kennel method we have seen great success in every dog that has come through our doors. We have been able to fix problem dogs, including gun shy dogs from other trainers, and help our clients realize the full potential of their dogs.
We hope to carry on the legacy of faith, success, compassion and integrity that makes the Perfection Kennel name what it is.
